Blind vs Sighted tasting at the Roundhouse

Recipe for a tasting…

A slightly distracting feature

And then there were the wines served in the following order and in the following way:

  • Graham Beck Viognier (Blind)
  • Bouchard Finlayson Blanc de Mer (Sighted)
  • De Trafford Chenin Blanc (Blind)
  • Lammershoek Roulette Blanc (Sighted)
  • Ataraxia Chardonnay (Blind)
  • Sequillo White (Sighted)
  • Fairview Caldera (Blind)
  • De Toren Fusion V (Sighted)
  • Belfield Cabernet Sauvignon (Blind)
  • Shannon Vineyards Merlot (Sighted)
  • Camberley Philosophers Stone (Blind)
  • Ernie Els Ernie Els (Sighted)

Just for the record, this is a ridiculous lineup! The aim of the tasting was to really uncover how we taste and evaluate wine, both in the glass, and on the brand association we have with wine. Guests were asked to price each wine, i.e. what they would pay, and the blind wines were then revealed. The biggest experiment of the night was the very sneaky decanting of the Camberley Philosophers Stone into the Fusion V bottle. We had Guests shouting out R300 and R500 offers for this R80 wine based on the incredible brand that Fusion has. The Fusion was actually served in the Philosophers Stone bottle, which was served blind, and Guests also raved about it. It seems the visitors to this tasting had great palates and are keen for the big brands too!
