Tasting rooms in the Cape
Tasting rooms in the Cape have the unique opportunity to engage with people in their own beautiful environments, show off their wines and seed brand ambassadors following positive experiences. Indeed, many of the Estates have shelled out loads of cash to setup restaurants, delis, picnic spots etc. So, evidently it is good business sense to bring people to the Estate.
From a consumer perspective, especially us locals, we have a typical timeline to visit Estates over the weekend. Friday evening is out, so its Saturday and Sunday that are up for grabs. I am not usually up for drinking wine before 11am on a Saturday, which gives me only a 3 hour timeline to visit the majority of wine Estates in the Western Cape, as most close at 2pm on a Saturday (some at 1pm, some at 3pm) and aren’t open on Sundays. This is hugely frustrating for anyone wanting to really explore our beautiful winelands over the weekend. Some Estates like Groot Constantia are open 7 days a week, but more choice is definitely needed.
I am really glad that www.spitorswallow.co.za is doing it’s thing. It is giving us winos a voice and the Estates quality market research, and hopefully this message gets out. Weekend wine tours shouldn’t end up solely at the big Estates or decadent dining destinations in the winelands, there is loads more to explore!
