The greatest wine bar in the world?

The British have given us a few things. These include; cricket, about half of the Concorde, a place for South Africans to earn foreign currency, the Queen, football hooligans and downright polite rugby fans. Another gift to humankind is the oldest wine establishment in London and possibly the world- Gordon’s wine bar. A friend of mine, blogger and wine pervert Brendon Shaw, told me I had to visit this place in London. The pestering continued, so on a random Saturday at the end of a trip to the city where the sun never shines I stumbled on this place. Here is the story in pictures:

Excited tourist (apologies for the rucksack)

Camera shy Italian staff...

Mood lighting and interesting looking guests...

Mood lighting and interesting looking guests...

Great bottle of Bordeaux...

Some cheese (Camembert)

All equals a spiritual moment in wine

This really is a must visit for a wine lover. Instead of walking down the freezing Thames and paying a fortune to go on a giant ferris wheel to see the “view” or standing in queues to see little paintings by dead people, we would advise visiting this little spot. It absolutely oozes with character owing to its cave like and candle lit interior. The wine list has wines from all sorts of countries, only two from South Africa though. Congrats to Hazyview for having its Chenin Blanc and Pinotage listed. Never heard of it or tasted it so went for a slightly aged Bordeaux and four large plates of cheese. Subsequent, slightly inebriated and heavily overexcited commentary can be found in the Flipcam video clip here.

Next up… South Africa’s top wine bar!

Aaaaah, Gordon’s… It is a treasure! Those bump-your-head arhces, the general gloom, the hunks of cheese washed down with good wine. It’s what makes Britain great :)

Amen Jeanne. It would get me through the cloudy weeks. Not often a dark cave is like the light at the end of the tunnel!
