Deconstructing Merlot

Merlot has often been seen as Bordeaux’s “other” red grape – the bland, somewhat boring younger sister of the hunky Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 2004 cult movie Sideways, Miles expresses some rather strong feelings about his dislike of the variety…”if anyone orders Merlot, I’m leaving!”, plunging this grape, so vulnerable to the vagaries of coolness, into vinous abyss. This is the tasting where we prove the cynics wrong! Join us as we explore the full expression of this misunderstood grape, from incredibly rich and luscious, to wonderfully soft and elegant!

Deconstructing Pinot Noir

Often referred to as “the heartbreak grape”, Pinot Noir has eluded many a winemaker. It’s a tricky grape to work with both in the vineyard and in the cellar, besides which, it requires a unique terroir to express its full potential. Luckily for us, a number of South African winemakers have managed to get it right, producing Pinot Noirs that rival some of the world’s best. In this tasting we will explore the characteristics of this revered variety and taste some of South Africa’s finest examples to uncover differences in style and region.

Deconstructing Shiraz

We will explore the grape, it’s characteristics in terms of flavour and aroma, and how it merges with oak. Our summer series of tastings returns! In February we are having another focus on white wines and the first is a White Wine Exploration at the Roundhouse. From the cool and crisp Hemel en Aarde to the oily and fruit infused Swartland white wines this will be a journey of flavour. Guests will be able to order tapas and pizzas from the Roundhouse Rumbullion Menu whilst the tasting meanders on the lawns, with the 12 Apostles and the sunset to crank up the ambience.
