This evening we explore wines from the Elgin valley and find out just what is getting everyone excited about these wines. Together we will explore cooler climate Sauvignon Blanc, Bordeaux white and red blends, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and a Noble Late Harvest from this range of top quality producers in the valley. Producers include Paul Cluver, Iona, Belfield and Oak Valley and we will unveil some new producers too!

The Swartland is producing some of South Africa’s most exciting wines, with its old bush vines expressing a lot of intensity of fruit. Winemakers such as Eben Sadie and Adi Badenhorst have made their names in this incredible region and this tasting aims to explore the unique terroir and wine making styles of the Swartland. Producers such as Scali, Lammershoek, Adi Badenhorst, Spice Route and Sequillo will be explored. This is not a tasting to be missed!

Grangehurst wines are renowned for their beautiful finesse and quality, owing to the careful attention of the winemaker and owner, Jeremy Walker. In addition, Grangehurst wines are incredibly special because of the fact that they are only released when Jeremy believes they are ready to start enjoying. So, the latest vintage on the market is a 2002! In this tasting we will be exploring current and older vintages and getting a superb understanding of vintage red wines in South Africa.

We will explore the grape, it’s characteristics in terms of flavour and aroma, and how it merges with oak. We will taste a range of top wines from South Africa and uncover how the different regions and winemakers influence this beautiful grape.

Bordeaux in South Africa

South Africa has a rich heritage of producing Bordeaux inspired wines from the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and white grapes; Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. This tasting explores some of the finer examples of Bordeaux style white and red wines, including single varietals and blends. We will take a journey through these wines and the different terroir in which they are produced in South Africa.

De Toren component tasting

De Toren is producing some of the best red blends in South Africa, recognised around the world for their quality and finesse. Each year Emil den Dulk, the owner, conducts two tastings for press and trade where he asks the panel to assess the individual components of the wine and choose the best blend. We are delighted to announce that he has agreed to run this tasting for Under the Influence. Guests will have the opportunity to taste the Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Merlot that make up the famous blends of De Toren. This tasting is truly a once off!
