May Wine Experiences in Joburg!

Under the Influence is proud to present another round of taste experiences in Johannesburg during the month of May. These include a journey through Italian wine and food, we also have the pleasure of tasting a vertical selection of De Trafford Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, right back to 1997. Finally, our mini wine course, Under the Influence of Flavour, is a fun and informative way to brush up on the basics whilst drinking superb wine. Here are all the details for you.

Tuesday 12 May

Under the Influence Wine Society and Culinary Productions proudly present a journey through Italian wine, which would be incomplete without a dabble of Italian food! Italy is home to over 2000 different varietals, from the cool climates of the north to the blazing heat and coastal influence of the south. In this wine and food experience we will take a journey through Italian and South African (Italian inspired) wines, depicting the varietals and styles of different regions, all paired with beautiful food prepared by Debi van Flymen. Wines to taste include; Morgenster Tosca, Fairview Barbera, Giovani Corino Barolo, Frescobaldi Chianti and a strange but beautiful Schiopettino. These will all be served with custom made canapes, to ensure a superb taste experience, and leading to a better understanding of Italian wines and just what kind of food pairs well with it. The Wine Discovery Mini Course is a journey through flavour in wine and is a superb way to brush up on the basics while tasting beautiful wines. Wine is all about flavour, so in this mini course we look at three types of flavour; Primary fruit driven flavours, Secondary oak induced flavours and Tertiary bottle age flavours. Come and get Under the Influence of great wine with us.

Wednesday 20 May

De Trafford is one of our favourite boutique producers in the country, famed for their limited release, naturally produced wines. We have the huge privilege of exploring two of their most renowned wines, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. We have examples of each dating back to 1997, 2000, 2004 and the most recent 2007. A tasting of these will uncover just how our premium South African wines age in the bottle and how the characteristics of the wine change over time. It will also be an interesting opportunity to discuss just how the vintage of a wine can influence its quality.
